Do you think Serbia will be able to send Mladic to the Hague? What will be the consequences if it ca Do you think that that the Serbian government has the power to send Mladic (and Karadzic) to the war crimes tribunal? Do you you think the govnerment knows where these people are. How to you think Milosevic's death effects the chances of Mladic surrendering. I heard that he was in negotitians to surrender but I think it would be more difficult to get him willingly now?
What will be the repercussions if they don't. Will it stop EU enterance talks?
Is it fair that the Serbian people's fate will be decided on those two men. Serbia has done a lot to co-operate but are these two people too hard to find? Why can't UNPOFOR arrest Karadzic when he said to spend time between Bosnia and Montenegro. Can the Serb govt be the only ones blamed for this inaction.
Croatia was blamed for not handing over Gotevina. But when he was caught he was in the Canary islands.
Tell me your opinions?????
Raso slazem se s tobom... My ex's father knew Mladic and said that he was living quite openly in Beograd (and had protection from people high up)...But I think in the last couple of years his influence has declined and he can no longer rely on that support...And now he is almost in hiding (from what I hear anyway)
And Karadzic is completly different he never had official protection, but was always hiding in Monastries. I thought in Bosnia and Montenegro, but if you say Greece I believe you..
I do hope they go to the hague because it is not fair that Sebia's future is held hostage to them.....
And if the small fry have gone...I think the big people should go to.
And it important that they go to start to clense the past..
Don....thankyou for your interesting idea...I understand where you are coming from... but I think it is flawed for a few reasons...
Yes you can argue that War criminals are different ordinary... Have you read Slavenka Drakulic -they would never hurt a fly?
(though interestingly many paramilitries were realised early from Serb prisons to fight in Bosnia)
I think it is important to bring these people to justice and stop it happening in the future...
And I don't think you punishment would work...Can you imagine the reaction of Mladic working in an old people's home in Tulza!
Also for anybody the says the Hague is anti serb...It might have started that way but ..I think it is trying to be neutral now ... and fight for justice whatever the side....Serbs, Croatians, Bosnians, and Albanians have all been indicted... Of course Nato never will... But then again that is the same always about the winners....
Serbian government surely has power to send General Mladic to the Hague - there is no doubt about it. Hey, even my some of my father's friends from Serbia know where he is (or at least knew, since they have last seen him a year or two ago). When they know where he is - government must know that too.
As for Mladic's surrender - I confidentially know he is guarded by small paramilitary organization, and that he would rather commit suicide, that go to the Hague. He won't surrender (at least he thought so few years ago).
I don't understand why the government won't arrest him, since they are risking making few more problems (and they already have too many - like Kosovo).
The main reason they don't want to send him to the Hague is because they are either afraid of provoking new civil war and massive protests against such move (because he is still regarded as hero by many people) or because some small number of powerful politicians and/or mafia bosses are afraid he will give away some information, vital to them, which would cause their fall from power.
I personally think that whole government is afraid to send him to the Hague because it would cause unrest in already unstable country, and the current government would, without doubt, loose power, and Radical party would take over the country (which I find the greatest fear of local democrats.
Radovan Karadzic is another matter - I confidentially know he is not in Serbia and Montenegro - as he probably fled to one Sveta Gora's monasteries in Greece. It is also not vital to Serbia to send hem to the Hague, as he had absolutely nothing to do with Serbia.
UNPROFOR cannot arrest Mladic and Karadzic in foreign territory (Serbia and Montenegro) as they have no authorization (they could only, perhaps, arrest them in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but they are not in Bosnia).
As for repercussions - European Union has already suspended entrance talks, and now it is Serbian politicians' move - either to send Mladic and Karadzic to the Hague or to let Serbian people suffer because of them.
At least Montenegro might soon get independence and will enter EU soon....
Why are the cowards Karadzic and Mladic still at large? If they are innocent as they proclaim, why not turn themselves in and prove their innocence as did the thier Bosnian, Croatian, and Albanian counterparts. What are they afraid of? I'm sure they will get a fair trail something they did show to the thousands of victims killed under their command.
Because cowards don't die, -heros do. It's one of the sad realities of life...
In view of the current situation in Belgrade, will Ratko Mladic ever be surrendered to the Hague? @qaa_question
Probably not. The Serbs are very nationalistic and proud people. On the surface they may appear apologetic for what happened after the dissolution of Yugoslavia, but deep down, they probably believe they were justified. They're not going to give him up easily, as I am sure they still consider him a national hero. But this is a generalization and certainly doesn't apply to many Serbs, who I believe to be genuinely compassionate and rational.
