Herbal remedies for kidney stones/prevention of?
What herbal remedies are good to take to deal with kidney stones while you still have them, and what might be a good life-long remedy to prevent future occurrences? I have one little guy (2mm) in my right ureter which I am waiting to pass. I'm drinking as much as possible, but if there are any herbal remedies that might assist with pain, passage or dissolution, I'd love to hear about it. And since I never want another, I'd like to learn about natural remedies for prevention - something I can do for the rest of my life. I've done some research already and have found some suggestions, but nothing consistent. Since I haven't yet passed it I don't know which kind it is, if that makes any difference.

Ultimately, they are typically formed when someone gets more Calcium than their body can absorb (among other minerals taken in too high of doses), then the Calcium builds up in their kidneys. With that being said, the main natural products that help with kidney health are Cranberry, Juniper Berry, Corn Silk, and Uva Ursi. No supplement can make any medical claims on their own, so the supplements can't claim to help/prevent kidney stones.... but if your kidneys are healthy, they should run really well.

In terms of calcium-based kidney stone prevention, is bottled water safer to drink than tap water?
Yahoo had a great article today about how the bottled water industry is largely based on misleading advertising about the source of their water. Lots of bottled water brands are just plain old tap and largely don't actually have stricter safety standards than plain tap. However, when I got my first kidney stone, I switched to bottled for fear of the high mineral content in my cloudy tap water. True it could be chlorine or bubbles making it cloudy, but what do you think?

Water bottlers are required to list their water sources on their product labels. Any municipal water that is used as a raw ingredient is extensively filtered, purified, and disinfected prior to bottling. If you're looking to avoid dissolved calcium, I would recommend going with a "distilled" water product. The distilled water sold by my former employer contains less than 10 ppm (parts per million) total dissolved solids, including calcium. To put that in perspective, a half-liter (1 pt, 0.9 fl oz) bottle of distilled water contains *at most* 5 mg (0.0002 oz) dissolved solids. In contrast, water out of the tap can contain 50 times that amount of dissolved minerals. It depends on where you live. Your local water authority should be able to give you information about the purity of your tap water if you ask for it.

urocit K for the prevention of kidney stones?
I was just put on some of that.. anything i need to know? Is anybody here taking it?

Hi Lasey B, urocit K is used to make the urine less acidic. This effect helps the kidneys get rid of uric acid, thereby helping to prevent gout and kidney stones. This medication can also prevent and treat certain metabolic problems (acidosis) caused by kidney disease. You need know , that many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. But also, this drug may cause serious stomach or intestinal problems (e.g., bleeding, blockage, puncture). Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: abdominal swelling, black/bloody stools, constipation, dizziness, fast heartbeat, severe stomach/abdominal pain, difficult/painful swallowing, severe vomiting, vomit that looks like coffee grounds. This medication may cause high potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia). Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: muscle cramps/weakness, severe dizziness, slow/irregular heartbeat, mental/mood changes (e.g., confusion, restlessness), tingling of the hands/feet, unusually cold skin. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. Jason Homan
