How does K&N Cold Air Intake compare to others?
I added a Jet Chip to my car (2007 Magnum 3.5HO) and was very satisfied, now looking to add a little sound and a couple more ponies. K&N is generally more expensive, but claims ease of installation and a great reputation.... Does anyone have experience w/ KN or other Brands names?
A cold air intake is a cold air intake unless you're talking about the AEM V2 cold air intake. They all consist of metal pipe mandrel bent to fit the car, couplers and clamps mounting the filter outside or drawing cool air from outside. K&N uses filter oil and dont generally filter too well. I had one on my turbo car and it allowed particles to pass and enter my intercooler which is where they sat until i took it off and cleaned it. So I switched back to the stock filter and it catches everything without killing my turbo spool characteristic. Lots of filters are now using dry filter elements because for some reason filter oil is bad. K&N is mainly for improved fuel mileage, they dont add a whole ton of power (5-7 HP) sometimes.
will adding a K&N air filter to the end of my existing aftermarket intake increase horsepower?
I have a 99 prelude with aftermarket intake that was on it when I bought it. it just has some generic air filter. will putting on a k&n one help me get more horsepower?
It would be hard to say without knowing more about your setup...what kind of filter your current aftermarket intake uses.
It's important to understand the 'why' these things help improve performance. Stock intakes use an air box or 'resonator' that functions much like your exhaust muffler, except on the intake end. They suppress engine noise eminating from the intake valves. By removing the box you get gains typically for the following reasons:
- less airflow restriction, since the box uses a twisting path of air channels...an aftermarket system is a straight pipe.
- improved airflow because aftermarket filters tend to have improved filter surface area for reduced restriction
- when the intake pipe is located outside of & below the engine compartment, they suck in cooler air which is denser & richer in oxygen...more oxygen, better engine combustion. These systems are called Cold Air Induction (systems) or CAI.
You'd only likely see power gains using a K&N filter if it offers improved airflow over whatever you're currently using. But you're already seeing your greatest improvement by virtue of having the aftermarket straight pipe intake in place in the first place...so a K&N could not provide you much improvement.
BTW, cold air induction systems are proven by before/after dyno tests to work. The actual gains on Honda cars vary from as little as approximately 3-5 hp on the smaller SOHC 4 cylinder motors to around 20 hp on the V6 Acura TL engines.
Also, installing cold air induction systems represent the cheapest way to get the most horsepower gains. And what 'tuners' find is that CAI works best when coupled with a performance exhaust system...improves flow on both the intake & exhaust ends.
How to show there is n such that k^n starts with a a given sequence of digits?
Let k be a positive integer that's not not an integer power o 10. Show that, given any finite sequence of digits, there exists n such that k^n starts with such sequence. For example, given the sequence 2, 3, 9 3, 7, there exists n such that the the first 5 digits of k^n, from the left, are 23937.

log(S) + m ≤ n log(k) < log(S+1) + m and, therefore,
log(S) ≤ n log(k) - m < log(S+1) (2)
Since k is not an integer power of 10, then log(k) is irrational. Hence, according to a known fact, the set {n log(k) - m | n and m positive integers} is dense in R. It follows there exist m and n that satisfy (2), which, as we can see by a simple algebraic manipulation, implies (1).
This proves your assertion.
