The BBC, CNN, CBC Newsworld and other all-news broadcasters covered scarcely anything but the narrowly averted catastrophe throughout the day. Funny thing, but the general public wasn't buying it. The reaction was surprisingly cynical. ...

news reports say very cold very this week, online weather forecasts, eg bbc say different?
yesturday there were news reports of extremely cold weather heading our way, but if you look at the bbc's 5day weather forcast as well as itv and others, according to them the coldest we get during the day including in scotland is about 3oC, whats on?

The forcast of extremely cold/snowy weather are usually carried by the tabloid gutter press, for no other reason than to sell more copies. It was on the front page of the Daily Express yesterday. There is not so much pressure on other media to try to shock the public, although they sometimes play it safe, after the '87 storms (Michael Fish!).

can any one tell me how to read and understand the weather news? I need to understand the terms.?
I have the intention to daily follow up the weather news because I had got a new job which demands that I have to travel a lot. I want to use the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/i/ I don't understand, for example, the difference between heavy showers and heavy rains. I don't understand many others symbols. I wonder if I could have a summary on that. thanks a lot.

Showery precipitation (Rain Showers) comes from Cumuloform type of clouds (the big puffy ones). This type of precipitation is generally heavy than rain. It is intermittent in nature, meaning it willstart and stop as the cululus clouds move over you. Showery precipitation can last for minutes or extend through hours. Rain is from stratiform type of clouds. These clouds normall cover a vast area and are generally a solid sheet of gray clouds in appearance from the surface. The rain they produce is continuous and typically lighter than rainshowers. Rain generally lasts for hours or can extend through several days. BOTH types of precipitation can be present, as you can have continuous rain with embedded thunderstorms or rainshowers in the vicinity of frontal systems.

Has BBC News had its day?
Has anyone else noticed the decline in the news service provided by the BBC, they seem to spend most of the time advertising other BBC programmes such as Celebrity Come Dancing, rather than actual news, the weather Presenters seem to have their own show within the news and its all getting a waste of time. With all the events happening around the world why dont they deal with these rather than the rubbish they cover? Can you suggest anything we can do to change this?

It's terrible these days, so sick of them advertising programmes and passing it off as genuine news *cough*Panorama*cough* Newsnight is still fairly watchable though, and I'm quite fond of the Channel 4 news. Best way to change it is to a)stop watching and b)tell them you've stopped watching, and why.
